ROUND 4:
RANGER OUTDOORS SWAN BREAM CLASSIC
SUNDAY 26 AUGUST - MATILDA BAY FORESHORE
The fourth Classic of the year got underway with all competitors expecting the worst Huey could throw at them, and they weren’t too far from the mark. As the day dawned, the 36 boats that braved the forecast were met with 30/40 knot squalls ripping across Perth water, forcing all teams to really think about their first location of the morning. However, in addition to a good high tide the barometer was rising and fishing looked ok even if the weather was getting worse. This was proven true by 24 teams weighing in with some very healthy fat winter bream.
Scraping into fifth place on the toss of a coin was Team Sneaky consisting of Chris Elliot and his boat hopping partner Szarn Tink. Fishing up river in Chris’s sleek Nitro, the boys weighed in 4 fish for 1.965 kilo. Chris would like to thank Ranger Outdoors for their great support of this year’s classic series.
Fourth place and weighing 2 fish for 2.230kg were Team Berkley’s young duo of Daniel Bonasera and Antony Caporale. In one of the smaller crafts in the field, these guys fought hard all day to catch two kilo plus fish and pull off their best finish in a classic this year.
Once again Mr Consistence has slotted into a top 5 finish with his ever reliable partner Nathan Gilders. Team Trophy held the top spot with 4 fish weighing 2.295 kilo for a very short 15 minutes before being knocked down to a familiar third place. Dror Pietsch and Nathan would like to thank Avante Marine, Enviro Jigs and Black Diamond Rods.
Carrying on from the win in the last Classic, Team Gumby fished their ever reliable haunt of Claisebrook Cove. A very respectable bag of 4 fish for 2.370kg earned the fellas’ second place and a 67 litre Engel Esky each for their efforts. Jeff Murray and Gary Loveday are now becoming a well oiled force in the 2007 series and are looking for a good result at the Mandurah Boat Show to round out the year.
After being disqualified for a late tag return at the second round Luke Ryan and Alex Griesdorf haven’t looked back slowly climbing through the field to pull off their first Classic series win, earning themselves 2 60 litre Engel fridge/freezers worth $3200. Weighing in four very similar fish for a very healthy 2,805 kilo. Team Fishing WA were pumped after fighting off 70 anglers and some nasty weather. Luke and Alex would like to thank Mandurah Tackle Mart and Fishing WA for all their support, with the next event in Alex’s home patch these guys could be up for a big finish to 2007.
The Joondalup Boat Shack $400 cash Big Bream was caught with-in the first 15 minutes of the start in Claremont Bay by Team BCFs Shawn Saunders. After putting his 1.545kg horse into the livewell Shawn inspected his lure and put it straight back were the kilo and a half bluenose had come from hooking up almost instantly again. He thought this was his day as another unseen monster took line of a pretty tight drag. With the boys all smiles the fish turned straitening his jig and freedom was won. Shawn and Shane still placed a very respectable 8th place.
WA Bream Classic Series would like to thank their sponsors, Tracker Boats, Engel Australia, Ranger Outdoors, Platypus, Berkley, Jim Beam, Halco, Joondalup Boat Shack and Johnson pumps to name just a few. With out the support of top companies such as these, this series would not be what it is today, giving away almost $75,000 in prizes so far this year with one round and the major prize still to go.
There is one final Bream Classic Series competition to be held this year, at the Mandurah Boat Show on the 14th of October. The weigh-in will be held on Bertrum Bay in front of a possible 12,000 spectators, and the presentation will be done by Starlo on the main Yamaha stage so everyone is welcome to come along and see this years final winners. The main prize of a fantastic $20,000+ Tracker Pro Team 175 Tournament Fishing Boat will also be drawn. All competitors in any of the previous Classics have qualified to enter the draw, but must be present to claim the boat.
Remember anglers that the Mandurah Boat Show Bream Classic can only hold 40 competitors so get your entry forms in quick.
The top five teams from this round, along with the other rounds are eligible to represent WA in the 2007 National Bream Classic grandfinal held in Port Macquarie NSW. You will be competing against the top anglers from every state, and be in with a chance to win a tournament ready Skeeter boat and trailer package worth over $45,000.
